This article explains how to set up PHP-Fusion so that users must validate their email address when registering at your website.
This is particularly useful to prevent bots from automatically registering and then spamming the message boards, comments, etc.
To use email verification in PHP-Fusion first go to "System Admin" then "Registration Settings" then set the following options to "YES".

2. Use email verification for registration?
Click "Save Settings".
Now, users who register themselves, will be sent a "Validation Email" shortly after registration, which contains a link that must be clicked on before their account will be activated.
However, they must validate their account within 24 hours. If the user waits more than 24 hours before clicking the link their account will not be activated. The reason for this is that PHP-Fusion deletes all unactivated accounts after 24 hours.
You can change the interval at which unactivated accounts are purged by making the following modification to PHP-Fusion.
Open the file “footer.php” in the root directory of PHP fusion and go to line 22.
You should see the following line of code:
$result = dbquery("DELETE FROM ".$db_prefix."new_users WHERE user_datestamp < '".(time()-86400)."'");
The number 86400 is the number of seconds to wait before purging unactivated accounts. 86400 seconds = 24 hours. Change this number to suit your needs.
For example, if you wanted to give a user 30 days to activate their account you would enter a value of 2592000.
If you wish to disable purging of unactivated accounts, simply delete the above line. This would obviously give a user an unlimited amount of time to activate their account.
